Victorian Government Defends Exemption of Crown Casino from Smoking Ban

As of June 29, 2007 at midnight, customers will no longer be allowed to smoke to their heart's content in pubs and clubs in the Victoria area.

Nonetheless, the high-roller gaming rooms of the Crown Casino facility are exempt from the smoking ban. Victorian Premier, Steve Bracks, commented that the gambling casinos in other states have a similar exception. Premier Bracks said that International High-rollers are exempt because the international business is present and important to Victoria.

Bracks said that has been the case with the other states in Australia which have casino facilities like Victoria. He further stated that they have made that policy clear before they allowed the Crown Casino High-roller room to continue operating despite the smoking ban.

Bracks also said that it is a small percentage of what is going to be a great help to the people of the state.

He added that the state has to acknowledge and give recognition to casinos like the Crown Casino that have a special and vital contribution to the state, especially with the welfare of its residents.

Bracks said that they want to have a public law that can be applied across the nation, so that they could cooperate with other states and territories.
