UK Gambling Addiction on the rise

The British Medical Association conference is calling for a deeper study regarding gambling addiction. They want to center the study on the prevention and possible treatment to curb gambling addiction.

Gambling addiction is on the rise as internet gambling and super casinos are now more accessible but there is little support to help the sufferers. Next to drugs and alcohol, gambling addiction is considered a Cinderella addiction. The general public has the wrong perception of gambling addiction as they tend to perceive it as a mental health condition and less serious than any kind of addiction.

Doctors further emphasized that because of national lottery, the public tends to accept gambling as socially acceptable and it is accessible via the internet on the 24 hours and 7 days a week basis.

The gaming industry is worth as much as 40 billion pounds sterling a year and the income is expected to grow leaps and bounds as the government plans to establish a Vegas style super casino.

Eight cities have been selected for super casinos and another sixteen casino licenses were approved for smaller casinos.

It comes after the number of gambling addicts soars high and continues to rise and the negative side is that three hundred fifty thousand gambling addicts are from the UK alone.

A consultant psychiatrist in London, Dr Jan Wise, says that the real alarming situation is that not only adults are getting addicted to gambling but children as well.

The latest figures shows that three quarters of children ages twelve to fifteen years of age have admitted to playing slots and five percent of them show gambling addiction.

Dr. Wise cautioned the medical field and the general public that the problem of gambling is getting worse and this should be properly attended to treat the gambling addicts. The psychiatrist also made an emphasis on the prevention of gambling addicts.

Dr David Sinclair said that gambling projects fun and enjoyment thus covering the dark side of addiction.

The head of science and ethics at the British Medical Association, Dr Vivienne Nathanson, further explained that a closer look at how gambling addiction affects the families and society and how the doctors should refer them on treatments should be undertaken.

The British Medical Association had agreed to make a study about the effect, treatment and prevention of gambling addiction.
