Sportingbet, a London based online gambling company whose former chair was held in America last year, announced January 31,2007, that two of its directors had quit the company.
Andrew McIver, chief executive of Sportingbet, said that the company decided to resize their board to help them be more efficient in their business. He named the two departing directors as Mark Blandford and Bob Holt. Blandford is an executive director while Holt is a non executive director.
In addition, after resigning, the two indicated that they plan to pursue different business interests. Meanwhile, senior independent director, Sean O'Connor, will take Holt's previous position as chair of the audit committee. The changes are effective immediately.
Sportingbet is one of the gambling companies that was affected by the law passed by US Congress last year which prohibited banks and credit card companies from accepting payments for the online gambling sites.
Some Europe-based gambling companies collapsed after the passage of the bill, while other companies that continue to operate in the US are still feeling the cost of transferring to other places. Due to the UIGEA, the law that disallows online gambling, the Sportingbet PLC sold their U.S. operations for a token $1.
