On May 27, 2007, Mr. Max Baer Jr., who played the character Jethro in the television sitcom "The Beverly Hillbillies" in the 1960's, has bought land north of Douglas County for his planned casino establishment.
Baer's buyout of the land for about $1.2 million from the Metcalf Family Trust Organization came on the heels of his recent sale of the old Wal-Mart facility in Carson County for about $8.5 million. Baer said that he is putting his finances where the opportunities are.
This buyout shows his devotion to Douglas County. It was the first of the 2 lands that he will need for his Jethro Bodine's Beverly Hillbillies Casino and Mansion facility.
Jethro would not buy the remaining 20.78 acres of land owned by Michael Hohl and Dink Cryer, a Carson City businessmen, until he receives the important zoning changes and the height permission for the casino facility.
A special building permit, height permission and a zoning law amendment will have to be passed by June 12, 2007 by the county's planning commission. The zoning map amendment will also have to be thoroughly discussed by July 5, 2007 by the commissioners.
Some variances will also be needed for the planned 200 ft flameless oil derrick and reader board. If approved, the casino facility would be under a proposed Riverwood Commercial center located on U.S. Highway 395 south of Carson City.
A 40,000 sq ft casino gambling space with 800 electronic slot machines and 16 casino table games would be supported by a lot of food establishments like the Jethro's All You Ken Eat Buffet. The proposal would also feature a showroom, cinema area and 5 story hotel establishment with 240 rooms.
This is the first casino project by Baer in Northern Nevada. His original plans for a casino facility began with Stateline, but he later contemplated a Reno location. Back in 2003, Baer paid a total of $4.3 million for a closed Wal-Mart Store in Carson, but that plan was also abandoned.
