A $350 million casino facility plan near Spanish Lake in the northern part of St. Louis County moved forward on November 3rd, 2009 when the St. Louis County Council decided to rezone 377 acres from industrial to commercial.
The casino proposal calls for a sprawling gaming complex that would feature a casino, convention facility, hotel, bars and restaurants, theater, pool and spa, golf course, surface and garage parking and a gorgeous five-turbine wind farm. But the casino project still needs to pass an environmental study and get a state gaming license, the number of which state voters limited to thirteen in a statewide referendum.
A gaming license appeared to be available in August 2009 when state gaming regulators informed Pinnacle Entertainment that it would lose its gaming license for President Casino, which is located at Laclede's Landing in downtown St. Louis if it move the gaming business or replace its Admiral riverboat casino with a new casino boat. But Pinnacle Entertainment announced last week that it would try to repair the hull of the boat.
Residents and environmentalists had voiced their opposition against the proposed Riverview Casino facility because of its proximity to the 4,318 acres Columbia Bottom Conservation Area and its location on a flood area. Critics had also voiced their opposition to the casino's size and the construction of another casino facility.
Metro East lawyer Brad Lakin of LakinChapman LLC in Wood River, Illinois and his wife, Hallie Lakin, executive Kenneth Goldstein of Argo Products Co., and real estate investor Julie McDonald are the principals of North County Development LLC, the group behind the casino project.
