Slap on the Wrist for Prescott

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott is only expected to get at most a mild reprimand but otherwise survive the report of the parliamentary investigation by standards commissioner Sir Philip Mawer over his relationship with casino tycoon Philip Anschutz.

Sir George Young along with his constituents on the Commons Select Committee on Standards and Privileges will be meeting July 20 after being handed over the report by Mawer.

It has been rumored at Westminster that Blair's second in command would only get a slap on the wrist. No action is believed to be taken since Prescott has already declared the visit to the Colorado ranch of the billionaire owner of the Millennium Dome.

A number of senior ministers however believe that even mild criticism of Prescott should raise concerns about his future in the government. However, signs point to Blair backing up Prescott all the way, despite the fears of some cabinet colleagues of damage to the government.

"Nothing Tony has said would suggest he wants Prescott to go," said a Minister of Blair.

Prescott has told Sir Philip Mawer when questioned as to why he did not declare the visit that his permanent secretary had told him that there was no need since it is an official trip. Prescott registered the trip when the issue became public.
