No to Senecas Fulton Street Casino Plan

Sixteen casino critics attended the Council's Finance Committee meeting in hopes of persuading lawmakers to reject a plan to sell a two-block stretch of Fulton Street to the Seneca Erie Gaming Corporation. The Council still must hold a formal public hearing before voting.

Casino foes urged Common Council members Tuesday to put up as many roadblocks as possible to try to halt the Seneca Nation casino downtown, saying the project will be an economic and social nightmare for Buffalo.

"The No. 1 message is that it is not a done deal," said Robert Heffern, co-chairman of Citizens against Casino Gambling in Erie County, referring to the Seneca's plan to build a $125 million facility near the Cobblestone District.

Seneca Erie Gaming officials have stressed that they intend to build a downtown casino regardless of whether the city sells Fulton Street. If the street can't be integrated into the design, planners said they will build a "less creative" complex without some park like features that include lagoons and a creek.

Lawmakers said whether the public hearing would be held and a vote taken on Fulton Street during the August recess remained unclear; otherwise, it would be held over as unfinished business until September.
