On March 17, 2007, with an assist coming from the Congress, an important road which connects Interstate 55 with an ongoing casino project located in Lemay is now back in construction. The fixed road, which will allow customers to go through the Mississippi River from Weber Road, had a lot of problems due to flooding in the area back in 1993.
The proposed path of the road will cover some small parts of the land located just south of the River Des Peres, which was bought by the government after the 1993 flood. The Federal Emergency Management Agency does not allow any development to happen on the land parcels. But even if the restriction did not threaten to stop the project, it would bring an added expense to the road, which would be paid for by the operator of the casino, Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. The road would have to avoid the river like a "quasi bridge" to get over the land parcels, however the Senate has passed a bill that will remove those restrictions.
The bill was sponsored in the House by Rep. Russ Carnahan, a Democrat from St. Louis. It passed the chamber just last month and only needs the president's signature to make it into law. Considering that the road will be an important factor in the business operation of the gambling casino, the development officers of the St. Louis County and Lemay view it as an important development for the economic revitalization of the area, which has been severely troubled with the loss of companies and industrial businesses.
Denny Coleman, President of St. Louis County Economic Council, commented that there have been some inquiries from interested parties for industrial, commercial and even residential developments in the area. The Vice-President of the Lemay Development Corporation commented that the road may not be the final solution to the county's problem, but it will be a solution to one of the lingering problems for development in the area.
