ScanSafe Global Threat Report Shows 40% Increase in US Requests for Internet Gambling

The first week of November saw the Neilsen/NetRatings report a 50% drop in online casino gambling in the United States. November 16th saw the release of contradictory figures by ScanSafe, which show a 40% increase in computer based requests from online casinos in the United States.

The Neilsen/NetRatings are based on a sample of websites unlike ScanSafe. The ScanSafe Global Threat Report draws its data from the analysis of web requests processed by the company. October saw the company process over 5 billion web requests in addition to 10 million web threats.

Dan Nadir, Vice President of product strategy at ScanSafe, said "Given the recent U.S. legislation, we had anticipated a drop in visits to gambling sites. However, we actually saw an increase in web requests from the U.S. for online gambling sites."

Many speculate that the recent passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in the United States may have been the cause of the jump in figures . They believe the recent attention and publicity may have driven people to go and see what was actually happening at online casinos. Of course World Series betting drove the numbers up as well.

Nadir noted that "Some of the Web requests were related to betting on the World Series in October. This could have been compounded by gamblers looking to register with alternative providers before further regulations clarifying the Act are put into place."
