Saginaw Chippewas Tribe Plans to Build Casino in Arenac County

On April 25, 2007, the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe announced that they are currently planning to build a new casino facility in Arenac County. Tribal Spokesman, Frank Cloutier, said that the tribe's casino plans will begin on land that is occupied by the Saginaw's Saganing Tribe located in Standish, which is about 120 miles from Detroit.

The Saginaw Tribe owns and manages the Soaring Eagle Casino Facility in Mount Pleasant. Cloutier further stated that the Saginaw Tribe has already announced the plans to their members. He did not identify a particular date for the construction and claimed that the details are still being evaluated and thoroughly discussed.

Eric T. Bush, the administrative manager of the Michigan Gaming Control Board's Tribal Gaming Section, commented that the tribe does not need to ask for permission to open their casino. The state has a gaming compact back in 1993 with the tribe that will expire in 2013 and permits the tribe to manage more than one casino.

Cloutier commented that the new casino will be constructed in an area across the Tribal Community Center that will open in January 2008. According to Bush, the state of Michigan currently has 17 gambling casinos, with 3 casinos in Detroit and 3 casinos currently under construction outside of the Arenac County area.
