Residents of Southeast Kansas Vote on Casino Plans

On March 26, 2007, the residents of Southeast Kansas were a step closer to fulfilling their dream of having a destination casino built in their area. The House already gave their final approval of the bill that will ultimately permit a casino establishment to be built in Crawford County or Cherokee County.

Kansas for Economic Growth has proposed a casino resort in the Cherokee County located on I-44 and Highway 400. The backers of the casino plans could produce around $200 million annually and create around 1,200 jobs for the county.

Critics of the plan say that added casino gambling in the area could be the main cause of more problems and temptations for gamblers who can not control themselves. The voters in Crawford County have already given their permission for the construction of the casinos in their area, but the residents from Cherokee County still need to vote regarding the casino issue.

The proposed bill will also allow the placement of slot machines in horse racing tracks, like the Camptown Greyhound Park in Frontenac. The proposal was sent to the Senate already where a close debate and vote is expected to take place.
