On April 3, 2007, it was announced that official voters from Sedgwick County will decide this coming August 7, 2007 on whether or not Sedgwick will host a casino gambling destination within its borders. In addition, they will decide if slot machines should be permitted at the Wichita Greyhound Park.
A majority of the county commissioners decided that holding an election is the best way to get the opinion of the residents in the area on the casino issue. If approved, it will also effectively increase and expand gambling activities in the area. The Kansas Legislature has already passed a bill which will allow casino gaming facilities to be built across the state. These are in Wyandotte County, Ford County and either Sedgwick County, Sumner County, Crawford County or Cherokee County.
The proposal will also permit an additional 2,800 slot machines to be placed in Wichita Greyhound Park, the Woodlands, which can be found in Kansas City, and the Camptown Greyhound Park located in Fronteniac.
But gambling will only be expanded if the voters will give their blessing by the end of this year. If the voters do not approve of the measure, Sumner County will be the location of the casino facility instead.
