Racing To Save Michigan to Gather Signatures for Casino Proposal

While Ohio state voters will decide the fate of casino gaming in the state this November 2009, residents in the state of Michigan may get their say on casino facilities at state horse racing tracks next year. That is because an organization is beginning to collect signatures in favor of placing casinos at Michigan horse racing tracks.

Racing To Save Michigan received the approval for their petition on October 14th, 2009 from the Board of State Canvassers. The petitions are expected to begin circulating around Michigan in the next few weeks. The entire gaming proposal involves eight casino licenses. Five of those casino licenses would go to horse racing tracks in Michigan.

In order for the casino proposal to be place on the ballot, the Racing To Save Michigan must gather at least 380,000 signatures and submit it to Board of State Canvassers. Gaming analyst Steve Schwartz said that this is the first step in a gaming process that could result in casino gaming at race tracks in Michigan.

He said that if Michigan residents are anything like Ohio residents then casino gaming could be a reality at Michigan racing tracks. In the state of Ohio, an organization secured the signatures needed to place a casino proposal in the referendum next month.

The proposal would bring four gaming facilities Ohio. Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo and Cleveland would host the casinos. The issue has been a hot topic in Ohio for months. Recent polls suggest that Ohio voters are in favor of allowing casino facilities in the state. The polls have differed in results but all show a 60% approval rate for the proposal.
