Prescott Will Remain in Charge -- Blair

Prime Minister Tony Blair said July 16 in an interview with BBC one's The Politics Show that he had not yet seen any evidence that John Prescott interfered in the selection process of the first super-casino in Britain.

Blair came to Prescott's defense over his controversial relationship with casino tycoon Philip Anschutz, saying that he did not understand the controversy surrounding their involvement.

Anschutz owns London's Millennium Dome, and is bidding for the license to turn it into a super casino.

Blair also rejected calls for an inquiry into the Prescott-Anschutz relationship, and added that his second in command will be assuming his responsibilities "as normal" come next month when he takes his holiday.

"So has anybody got any actual evidence that John has interfered in this process in an improper way?" Blair asked in the interview.

"I haven't seen any. I mean I've seen newspaper allegations about something to do with cowboy boots and some belt or something," he added, referring to the Wild West outfit that Prescott received from the billionaire Anschutz.

Blair also pointed out that Prescott is not doing anything amiss by promoting the Millennium Dome.

"That whole area of London is going to be regenerated. Why, why should we not want him to come and do this?" he said.
