Prescott Indignant Over Allegations of Corruption

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has expressed anger at allegations of corruption, saying he "totally rejects" the insinuation over his relationship with casino tycoon Philip Anschutz.

The corruption angle comes in as Anschutz is the owner of London's Millennium Dome, and is bidding for it to become Britain's first ever super casino.

Prescott repeatedly denied having any influence over the process of deciding where the UK's first and only super casino will be sited during a heated Commons dialogue.

He likewise rejected what he called "wild charges" that he was guilty of corruption.

"Surely by giving such privileged access to one of the bidders, he has seriously compromised the whole bidding process for Britain's only regional casino?" Conservative MP Greg Hands challenged.

To which Prescott quipped that he has been "reading too many press cuttings".

"Let us be clear, as I have been, that I was not associated in any way with the planning of the Dome or the sale of the Dome and the decisions were taken in the department by other ministers which I informed this House about," Prescott added.

"As for meeting Mr Anschutz... I did promise at the beginning when I met him to see if he was a carrying out the obligations of the development of the Dome, which meant 10,000 new homes, 24,000 jobs, UK Pounds 5bn in private investment," he further stated.

Prescott claims that he has made only one single official visit to a casino, in Australia. He said that meeting with Philip Anschutz hardly constitutes corruption.

"I think members have to make a serious judgment when it comes to accusations of corruption... There is none here and I think those charges should not be thrown around lightly in this house, although it's easily done in the press," said Prescott.
