On April 6th, 2008, the leader of the Catholic Bishop's Conference of the Philippines expressed his doubts on the plan to open a Las Vegas-style casino facility in Pasay City, Philippines. CBCP President, Jaro, Iloilo, Philippines Archbishop Angel Lagdameo commented that he was wary a casino, constructed with differences in features to match and gain recognition in a predominantly Catholic environment, would be the main cause of gambling addiction in the country.
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) commented that the gambling facility would include hotel establishments, a theme park, museum and other amenities. But Lagdameo said that even with other features, only time will tell what will be the dominant feature in the theme Park. He added that even with the prospect of producing a lot of jobs, it is still not a feasible idea.
The archbishop said that the CBCP's view regarding gambling cannot be change regardless of what features PAGCOR and the casino builders will add in order to make the whole facility wholesome and more family oriented. Archbishop Lagdameo said that while it is a fact that gambling does not break any laws, it unintentionally causes risks especially for people who do not have any self-control when it comes to gambling.
