Philadephia Supreme Court Approves SugarHouse Casino License

On August 20th, 2008, 4 Pennsylvania legislators commented that they will continue fight plans for the SugarHouse Casino facility in Philadelphia. The four vowed to urge the house to restore control over the territory in dispute, and will seek a federal court study. Senators Vincent Fumo and Michael Stack and state Representatives William Keller and Michael O'Brien are members of the Democratic Party representing Philadelphia.

On Friday, the state Supreme Court upheld the right of SugarHouse to construct a casino on the Delaware Riverfront, including the riparian rights to submerged waterfront land. Keller said that with all due respect to the Supreme Court, they have made a wrong decision regarding this issue. The court also decided in a four to two vote that the city's giving of the riparian aright should be upheld. Philadelphia's decisions were made in November 2007, under former Mayor John F. Street.

Under Mayor Michael Nutter, Philadelphia attempted to revoke a city-issued gambling license. The state Supreme Court decided that the revocation was invalid. SugarHouse, which is one of the 2 casinos given state licenses to construct casinos on the Delaware Waterfront, plans a gaming facility with three thousand slot machines, a public riverfront promenade, restaurants and entertainment.

Greg Carlin, the Chief Executive Officer of HSP Gaming, the developer of the SugarHouse Casino said that they are very happy with the decision of the Supreme Court and are looking forward to working with the city to build the best possible casino facility in the area.
