On November 29th, 2007, Penn National Gaming Incorporated, Wyomissing announced a plan to construct a $365 million casino resort in Wellington, Kansas. The gaming organization commented that it has applied for a license to be recognized as a lottery gaming establishment manager at the location, just south of Wichita, a problem needed to be cleared before the project can start.
The casino plan is for a 450,000 square foot facility which would feature a 350 room resort hotel and a 70,000 square foot gambling area with 1,500 slot machines and forty gambling tables. The Hollywood Casino-Wellington will follow the Hollywood theme by Penn National.
The casino would contain eating establishments, merchandise shops, sports bar and a 1,750 convention facility and entertainment facility. The Wyomissing organization also said that the plans would permit for expansion, a second part of the project that would build a golf course, another hotel facility and merchandise and entertainment facility.
The expansion will cost $200 million. The project would also create more than 2,400 jobs. Peter M. Carlino, chairman and Chief Executive Officer said that the Hollywood Casino-Wellington will serve as an inspiration for merchandise growth in south-central Kansas.
Spokesperson D. Eric Schippers commented that the construction project would be their second proposed project in Kansas after a $295 million casino project for Cherokee County. In each project, they must be approved as a manager before they can start building.
Schippers commented that there is no exact date for a decision made by the governing bodies on picking location managers. Aside from that, Penn National commented that they will back out from the acquisition plans regarding the Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, Md.
The company commented that a law, signed by Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley on November 19th, 2007, allowing up to 15,000 slot machines at five areas I the state excluding Prince William County, where Rosecroft is located. Because of the ban of the online casinos or so-called 'best online casinos' there is a real need for gambling outlets in Kansas City.
