On October 30th, 2007, the NSW Government is expected to announce their decision regarding a second casino facility in the area, with PBL the frontrunner in the race. It is widely believed that the administration of Premier Iemma has informed Tabcorp that they would need to impose bigger taxes for the poker machines of Tabcorp or they will allow a 2nd casino in the area.
Insiders said that Tabcorp protested the idea, allowing the government to pursue their casino plans. The negotiations with James Packer are one the reason behind the deadlocked between the government and the Star City casino regarding the latter's extension of their ten year license.
It has also been widely believe that PBL is currently scouting a new property in Sydney for the new location but the government denied that they have plan to issue a license. The casino facility will be likely constructed in Tweed Heads or in Hunter Valley. One industry insider commented that an announcement over the casino license will now be pushed back because of the criticism regarding the government's online wagering plans.
Critics also questioned the government's move to use the casino license plan to increase the taxes on Tabcorp regarding the poker machines at the Star City casino. The government plans to increase the taxes impose on Tabcorp from 24.5% to 39%. NSW Treasurer Michael Costa denied the rumors. Government sources also denied the any ongoing negotiation with Packer's PBL.
