Online Gambling Thorn for the United States

As the U.S. market for online gambling is believed to be bringing in billions of dollars per year and still growing, lawmakers are growing more concerned than ever.

Online gambling covers betting on practically anything popular from sports champions, box-office movies, celebrity awards, reality show winners, online casinos, online lotteries, horse racing, etc.

Analysts note that addiction can potentially pose a serious problem in gambling if the player gets hooked beyond their capacity. Some sources even point out that players who gamble online in the comfort of their home are more likely to get hooked and subsequently fall apart financially.

On top of all these, parents should be wary of their underage children being exposed to gambling.

In the U.S., there is still no federal law that specifically deals with online gambling.

There are U.S. States with laws banning online gambling, but the Justice Department insists that gambling per se is illegal. But then horse-race betting via the Internet is allowed, which adds to the ambiguity of how far legality issues go as far as online gambling is concerned.

Congress has at least tried to pass laws to confront online gambling but nothing has been solid so far.

The intense popularity of online gambling does prove that electronic commerce has made it and made it well. However, the public faces does not just the potential benefits of this thriving industry, but the eventual consequences as well.
