Although online gambling operations are prohibited in the US, its citizens are not legally kept from gambling online. But that may soon be a thing of the past if an anti-online gambling legislation should pass the Senate following its approval in the US House of Representatives.
American online gamblers make up half of the market in online gambling. This translates to 50 percent of the $10 billion spent last year on online gambling. The new legislation seeks to prohibit credit card companies to handle transactions that pertain to online gambling within the US. Government authorities will likewise get to dictate to ISPs to block access to online gambling sites.
The bill also bans gambling sites from "knowingly accepting" money from customers living in the US.
The House bill however exempts state-run lotteries and horseracing, two legal forms of betting across the US.
According to its supporters, the bill should curb the upsurge of gambling addiction and seeks to protect the young against the dangers of gambling.
Critics however, say that people who are into online gambling and the companies that provide it will always find a way around online gambling much like alcohol or drugs. They believe that regulating the $12 billion industry is much better than banning it altogether.
