Mohegan Sun, one of the world's largest casinos, announced its plans to further expand by undergoing a $740 million expansion. The project will entail the return of poker in the casino, as well as the addition of a new House of Blues music hall.
Tribal gaming officials are hoping that with the expansion, Mohegan Sun will serve their existing customers better and draw in new ones, including the early 20s and Asian market.
Mohegan Sun is now on its tenth year of existence. They currently employ about 10,000 employees and they are expecting to have 2,000 more in the coming 5 years. Daily, Mohegan Sun draws in 35,000 visitors, a number that generates an average of $1.5 billion in annual revenue.
"Project Horizon" as the expansion is called, will include the construction of a 38-story, 1,000-room hotel that is set to open in 2010. Inside this hotel will be a smaller House of Blues themed hotel. The House of Blues music hall is expected to open sooner in 2009, seating 1,500 people.
Mohegan Sun is expecting to draw in more Asian customer with the addition of Casino of the Earth, set to open in the summer of 2007. The new casino will feature table games and a Hong Kong street food outlet.
Young people are also expected to be drawn in by the new 45-table poker room. Mohegan Sun last hosted poker tables in 2003 before it shelved the game to make room for more slot machines.
