Missouri State Officials Hope for New Management of Casino Aztar ASAP

The Missouri Gaming Commission has been managing a casino facility in Southeast Missouri for about 2 months now, but they are hoping that a new owner will soon be found for the casino.

The Gaming Commission is in charge of the riverboat casinos in Missouri, but in November 2006 they decided to take over the management of the Casino Aztar located in Caruthersville until a new owner could be found for the casino.

On February 27, 2007, Commission Director, Gene McNary, defended their decision to take over the casino, saying that if they did not, 300 jobs would be lost as well as about $6 million in total revenues. The town, which suffered from a tornado calamity last spring, would be further affected by the loss of such revenue.

The owner of the casino was sold to another corporation, the Columbia Sussex Corporation of Fort Mitchell, Ky. But they could not find a duly licensed buyer for the riverboat casino in Caruthersville that is qualified for the commission, which has a set November 19th deadline.

McNary also commented to the legislative casino gambling committee that they are currently doing an oversight and they have capable managers who know what decisions they have to make. McNary further stated that a new buyer for the casino could be picked several months before the 9 month waiting time.

Many companies already submitted proposals on January 31, 2007, so intents to buy the gambling boat have been established and talks are already in progress. McNary refused to reveal the names of the companies. Attorney General Jay Nixon has been opposed to the Gaming Commission's takeover of the casino for quite a while, saying that it conflicts with the regulatory responsibilities of the Missouri Gaming Commission.
