On March 27, 2007, the Mayor of Evansville, Jonathan Weinzapfel, asked the state officials of Indiana to investigate a certain owner of a local gambling casino establishment. Mayor Weinzapfel's request to the state officials came after his office was informed of local Casino Aztar's plans to cut down about 70 jobs.
However, an official from Columbia Entertainment, the owner of Casino Aztar, commented that there has been no final decision regarding the lay-off of the employees. At present, Casino Aztar employs around 1,200 people.
In a letter addressed to the Indiana Gaming Commission, Mayor Weinzapfel recently wrote that Columbia Entertainment informed him of their plans to fire employees from Casino Aztar in the near future. Mayor Weinzapfel feels that there should be an adequate reason for this, besides that of Columbia Entertainment, since many people will be affected by this decision.
After finalizing a merger with the Aztar Corporation earlier this year, Columbia Entertainment announced that they will cut 20 jobs from their employees. Columbia Entertainment claimed that those jobs were being cut back because they have the same jobs at Columbia Entertainment's main headquarters in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.
