On April 27, 2007, the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Nation fulfills part of their plans by constructing a gambling casino in the state of Massachusetts by buying 125 acres of land in Middleborough.
Chairman of the Tribe, Glenn Marshall, commented that the land buyout made by casino developer, Herb Strather, on behalf of the tribe may mean that a casino facility in the location will one day be developed in that part of south eastern Massachusetts. However, Marshall said that no final decision has been made yet regarding the matter. There are several pieces of land that they have been considering.
Marshall commented that tribal officials have already begun negotiations with town officials, but there have been no results yet. It is also possible that the land near Route 44 could be developed for Tribal Housing instead of a casino facility. Strather, a long time supporter of the Mashpee Tribe, bid for land at the Precinct Street for about $1.7 million at an auction conducted in a town hall.
He paid the initial $5,000 needed for the bid and has 45 days to pay the rest of the cash. Middleborough, a rural area located about 38 miles from Boston, considered one of the top producers of cranberries.
A Selectman from Middleborough, Wayne Perkins commented that he is in favor of building a casino in the area because it will help create jobs.
Marshall commented that support from local residents is important to any of the tribe's plans. Other possible areas that the tribe is considering are New Bedford, Revere and Brockton.
