Manchester Member of Parliament Asserts Blackpool Should Get Super Casino

On February 27, 2007, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Greater Manchester area commented that Blackpool should be the location of the super casino because the place does not have any way to revive its economy.

A Labour Backbencher, Barbara Keeley commented that Blackpool should get the super casino as the Culture Secretary is urged to review the casino panel's decision to award the super casino license to Manchester instead of Blackpool, which is a coastal area. Keeley is just one of the Members of Parliament in the region who have signed a petition to review the decision. Keeley commented that many people that reside in the Greater Manchester area go to Blackpool for their holidays, so they will be the main beneficiaries if Blackpool gets the super casino.

About 3 MPs from Greater Manchester have signed the petition, aside from the 80 other MPs that are supporting Blackpool's cause. Secretary Jowell is under increasing pressure to review the decision. However, supporters of the Manchester bid, like Graham Stringer, the MP from Blackley, said that the government will lose all its credibility if they overrule the decision of a "supposed to be independent panel".

The Liberal Democrat MP for Manchester Withington, John Leech, has expressed disappointment that Manchester was the location chosen for the super casino, in addition to the fact that it will be built in an area that is considered one of the poorest areas in Manchester. It can only be the source of casino gambling addiction problems for Manchester residents. Tory MP from Ribble Valley, Nigel Evans, has also supported the Blackpool cause.
