Maine Lawmakers Evaluates the Possibility of Gambling Expansion in the State

Maine's House opened the possibility of gaming expansion in the state in the near future. The House dismissed the idea of only permitting an Oxford Casino bill to go before state voters in November 2010. Instead, a lot of legislators are looking to place more than one competing bill on the November 201 referendum.

The goal would be to give Maine residents a choice on what type of gaming expansion that they would like to see in the state. Washington County had a significant influence in the voting on March 31st, 2010. The Passamaquoddy Indian Tribe has been trying to build a casino in Washington County for a long time and they were happy with the vote that happened.

Passamaquoddy Representative Donald Soctomah said that they have been pursuing their dream for almost twenty years and officials keep telling them to wait for another year. He said that it looks like Washington County and the Indian tribes are being forgotten. He added that this development gives them an excellent opportunity to pursue their goal.

Another organization that was happy with the decision of the Maine legislators on Wednesday was Hollywood Slots in Bangor. The gaming facility has been trying to gain the privilege to offer casino table games and one of the proposals being discussed by the Maine lawmakers would give them the casino games, while allowing casinos in Oxford and Washington County.

Legislators pushing for gaming expansion believe that it is important to keep up with their neighboring states in the northeast. The states of New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and New York are all considering some form of casino gaming expansion.
