Korean Government Takes a Serious Stand Against Online Casinos

The Korean government showed that its stand against online casinos is serious when it arraigned 76 people on January 29, 2007. All 76 of them were online gamblers charged with using online gambling sites illegally. Among those charged was a doctor, a homemaker, a college student and a company executive.

According to the authorities, those charged were found gambling in online gambling sites for over a month and each had spent over 2 million won. Police officers stated that most of those charged did not know that gambling online is subject to Korea's gambling laws. Thus, officers in Korea hope to trail the whereabouts of the 5 operators behind the online gambling sites with the help of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).

Reports reveal that these gambling operators were from Pusan, Korea, but they later transferred to China in 2001, after they were caught running illegal gambling sites. According to police authorities, these suspects opened 2 illegal online gaming sites and have been using Hong Kong servers since 2004. They have a client base of over 20,000 Korean members.

In these illegal operations, gamblers sent their bets to the operators' bank accounts and the operators would later provide the bettors with game money. The operators also took 8% of the payment as part of their commission. The money involved in the scheme reaches a total of over 13 billion won.

Furthermore, the 5 operators are also members of the same family that runs illegal gambling businesses located in Shenzhen, China.
