On June 2, 2007, the U.S. Department of Interior gave their first approval of the expansion plans for the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas's casino in Eagle Pass.
The decision to permit the Kickapoo Casino to host added games, like Blackjack, Keno, Roulette, Dice Games and Simulating off track pari-mutuel betting, like horse racing or dog races, will add to their current poker and bingo games.
The slot machines remain illegal at the racing track. The 500 member tribe has been trying to get permission for added games for a long time and the process has yet to be completed.
The Kickapoo Tribe must still arrange a deal with the Interior Department officials about the regulations with the games. The State Government has also sued the federal agency's legislations that would permit more gambling games.
Tribal Chairman, Juan Garza, commented that the Kickapoo Tribe is pleased with the decision. He said that the decision only shows that there is a lot of opportunity on Class III Gaming in Texas. But they are against the ban on slot machines.
Under the IGRA or the Indian Gaming Regulatory, an Indian Tribe can offer the same games that are offered in the state. The state of Texas currently offers lottery and allows wagering on pari-mutuel horse and dog racing.
The Interior Department decided that the state's definition of lottery includes traditional casino table games, except for slot machines. The Texas Attorney General's office declined to comment on the issue for the time being.
