Hong Kong Considers Building Vegas Style Casino

Legislators in Hong Kong spent November 22nd considering building a Las Vegas style casino to compete with Macau and lure tourists back into the country. The Liberal Party proposed building a resort, which would be closely watched and regulated, on Lantau Island near the Disney theme park.

Anti-gambling groups in Hong Kong are expected to fiercely oppose the move, citing their existing problems with gamblers.

The quest for a casino has been renewed recently due to the success of the new casinos in Macau. Macau has already seen a dramatic increase in their visitor numbers and the casinos themselves already surpass Las Vegas in terms of income.

The leader of the Liberal Party, James Tien, is arguing for the casinos. He believes that they offer the chance to significantly improve Hong Kong's economic future. "We strongly believe that by shutting our ears to the idea of casinos, Hong Kong risks being left behind by regional competitors and losing out on a potentially rich stream of tourism, job creation and tax income," he said.

Several Asian nations, South Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia and Cambodia, already allow legal casinos and many others are considering them.
