The Golden Nugget Undergoes Renovation

The 60-year-old landmark Golden Nugget is getting a facelift, and now workers are giving it its finishing touches after its most elaborate renovation since 1984. That year, former owner Steve Wynn ordered the addition of an 18-story hotel tower that had a $50 million price tag.

Gamblers who bet big, otherwise known as whales, do not go by Las Vegas like they used to. However, operators of Fremont Street's renowned hotel-casino are investing $100 million in the hopes of turning this around.

Part of the tourism revival plan is a new shark aquarium, pool and restaurants, amenities that the operators hope will reel in enough small fish to boost the area's tourism.

This year's renovation's highlight is the addition of a 200,000-gallon aquarium that will house several species of reef-dwelling sharks, game fish, and a portion of a two-story water slide that will deliver swimmers to the casino-hotel's new pool.

Investment analysts viewed the change positively and of course, downtown customers were happy as well.

"I don't know if it will draw any new people, but I think they have done a nice job," said Fprt Myers, Fla. Resident Ron Skabor, 53. "I just like that it is a little smaller than the big casinos and it has all the class," Skabor said.
