Glacier Peaks Casino Holds Grand Opening In Vegas-Style

September 29, Friday, the Blackfeet tribe's new Glacier Peaks Casino held a successful Las Vegas-style grand opening, despite the accident that happened to one of the Flying Elvis Impersonators, who was injured from hitting the pavement.

Operated by the tribe's for-profit entity Siyeh Corp., this $7 million casino offers 500 slot machines blackjack, craps and roulette. Although these games are illegal under Montana law, Federal rules allow the games in tribal casinos. According to the officials the largest jackpot during its first month of operation totals $32,000.

The tribe will use the profits for such things as social programs, education and human service needs once the $7 million debt is paid off. According to Gary Green, the casino manager, the casino didn't begin advertising until Friday and it has drawn nearly half of its business from out of town.

According to Green, the theme of the occasion is to steal Las Vegas and bring it to Montana "and you know what, we did it,'' he said."There is nothing like this in the state of Montana.''

The opening also featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, free T-shirts, hors d'oeuvres, champagne and a 5-foot-tall ice sculpture.

Located near the entrance of Glacier National Park, Glacier Peaks Casino is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, about 330 people work at Glacier Peaks.

"It was an outstanding success,'' Tribal Councilwoman Betty Cooper said. "Every machine was occupied.'' Green said.
