Gaming Competition Between Maryland and Delaware

It used to be that the fight for casino gaming dollars in the United States was based on the East Coast and West Coast. It was Las Vegas strip against the Atlantic City in New Jersey and that was it. Now, there is stiff casino gaming competition on almost every state border. States are now compelled to reexamine the possibility of casino gaming just to stay competitive with their neighboring states. It is causing gaming expansion at an unprecedented rate.

On May 15th, 2009, the state of Maryland officials said that they are upset over gaming law changes that were made in Delaware this week. It is not sports wagering that will affect Maryland, but the casino gaming expansion that will also happen in the near future in their neighbouring states.

The state of Delaware will soon be featuring casino table games at their three horse racing tracks. It will include games that can only be found in Las Vegas casinos like craps and roulette. These are games that Maryland is not currently featuring. Maryland thought that they were catching up on the market last year when they approved slot machine gaming.

Two of their locations for slot machines are within 20 miles of Delaware. The new casino games at Delaware racing tracks will surely hurt the casino industry in Maryland. Legislators in Maryland have started to review the gaming issue. Some said that Maryland is now falling behind, while other officials said that Delaware is improving their gaming options to keep up with Maryland.
