New Frontier Casino Employees Nostalgic About Casino Closing

Pauline Caruso, manager of the New Frontier's Bingo Room for more than a decade, knew that the casino's shutdown was only a matter of time. Nonetheless, that did not make the news on May 16, 2007 any easier to accept, even though it was expected.

As the news of the $1.2 billion sale of the New Frontier Casino to a real estate investment organization in New York was announced, most of the 1,000 employees became introspective.

The New Frontier Casino will be shutdown and destroyed within 60 days to make way for a casino/hotel facility worth $5 Billion.

Anthony Liso, a bartender in the New Frontier Casino for 5 years, heard the rumors that the casino is closing down since he was hired to work there. But he continued to hope that he could work for 2 years at the casino. He is hoping that the new owners of the casino will help the displaced employees look for new jobs.

Phil Ruffin, the owner of the New Frontier Casino since 1998, said that some of their employees are relieved that the closing date has finally been announced. Ruffin hopes that the new gambling casinos, like the Las Vegas Sands Corporation's Palazzo will hire the displaced workers. He said that the Trump International Hotel and Tower, in which he is a business partner with Donald Trump, promises to accept some of the employees from New Frontier.

The New Frontier Casino had its heyday back in the 1960's and the 1970's where it was one of the top casino earners. The casino was owned by Howard Hughes and the Summa Corporation.

Employees of the New Frontier Casino said that the casino has never been able to recover from the effects of the 7 year culinary workers union that ended in 1998. Phil Ruffin has spent some of his own cash to renovate the casino, but to no avail.
