New Facilities for Problem Gamblers

Oregon is only the second state in the US to open a state run inpatient facility for problem gamblers. The facility located at 3324 Harold Dr. N.E., opened in the first week of August and was filled to capacity several days later.

The facility is part of Oregon's much broader effort to address problem gambling, which already includes 27 outpatient treatment clinics, short-term crisis/respite centers in Grants Pass and St. Helens, and a home-study program for persons with less severe problems.

The new inpatient facility is being operated under contract between the Department of Human Services and Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare. The state is paying $327,000 annually for 7 of the 11 beds in the facility.

"Oregon's program is recognized as one of the nation's most comprehensive," Jeff Marotta, Problem Gambling Services Manager in the Oregon Department of Human Services, said. "We believe the new facility is the West Coast's only residential treatment program specifically designed to help pathological gamblers."

Marotta said the only other state financed gambling resident program is in Louisiana. He also said that other residential treatment programs exist, but these are usually too expensive for the average problem gambler.

Oregon offers the treatment in the Department of Human Services program for free since it is paid for out of Oregon Lottery revenues.
