Councilor Cesar Palacio Wants Casino Facility for Toronto

On July 14, 2007, it was announced that the Toronto City Council will decide on Monday whether or not to approve new taxes. But one councilor has a different way of raising the cash the city needs.

Councilor Cesar Palacio from Davenport said that raising the taxes will just have a bad effect on the community. He thinks that Toronto should consider building a casino.

He added that the casino could produce the money Toronto needs. He pointed out the success of the tribal casinos in the U.S. Canada, Vancouver, Calgary and Halifax, Montreal and Hull are already earning a lot of money from the slot machines.

Some communities in Ontario earned a lot of money from the casino compared to the taxes that they received from residents. Supporters of the casino plans have suggested that a casino could be constructed in the port lands or near the Woodbine Racetrack.

Profits from the casino could be allocated for subway expansion and waterfront revitalization. But some residents are not enthusiastic about the idea, saying that it will just worsen the casino gambling addiction in their community, while others say that it is high time that their community enjoy what other communities are receiving from different gambling activities.
