Clubs Australia Pushes For Tougher Regulation on Online Casinos

On January 12th, 2009, Clubs Australia firmly believes that online gaming companies have an unreasonable advantage of their land-based casino counterparts in Australia. They are petitioning the government to study their policies when it comes to online casino facilities.

David Costello, the Chief Executive of Clubs Australia said that standardizing gaming laws would mean that online operators would not be allowed to accept wagers placed with a credit cards and featuring gaming promotions like $1000 in free wagers and would also be required by law to have employees trained in responsible gaming. He added that if you go to the Centrebet online site, the link to Responsible Wagering will only direct players to an online site in Los Angeles which features nothing more than an e-mail address.

Costello said that online casino facilities are not properly regulated, causing a major difference between themselves and land-based casinos and pubs. The existing figures seem to support the point of view of Club Australia. Betfair won a court case that gave them permission to conduct business in Australia. Since then, the online casino betting numbers in Australia have risen and Clubs Australia believes it is because they are not properly regulated. Costello said that poker machines are the most strictly regulated example of gambling in Australia.

In NSW alone, there are more than 200 pieces of law relating to poker machine operation. But when it comes to online gaming, the one hundred businesses that have secured a gaming license do not have any obligation to responsible gaming. Clubs Australia is hoping that the results of their efforts will be to have online casino sites to face the same regulations that land-based casinos have to endure. They are capitalizing on an inquiry by the Productivity Commission into gaming to begin their movement.
