Casino Workers in Nova Scotia Plan to Create a Union

On February 25, 2007, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a well-known global union, announced that they are helping casino workers based in Halifax organize a union.

The SEIU commented that they are currently meeting with Casino Nova Scotia employees working under the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation based in B.C., in a move to build up support for a Union for the employees.

The Service Employees International Union commented that the casino employees feel that it is time to form a union so that they can propose an increase in their salaries and benefits, job security, as well as fair and impartial treatment for all of them.

Tony Tracy, the National Union Organizer, estimates that about 600 casino employees, comprised of card dealers, cleaners and even security employees, will all be included in the bargaining agreement.

The union also says that the management of the gambling casino has begun taking steps to undermine their effort by placing materials in employee lounges which are anti-union.

According to the Service Employees International Union, they have about 1.8 million members all over the world, belonging in the health care, property service and public service industries.
