On March 29, 2007, the region's top official said that they have formed a task force to enforce gaming in Pittsburgh as peacefully and progressively as possible. Pittsburgh is set to open its first gambling casino in 2008, though there is still no official guarantee that the casino won't open until 2009.
Dan Onorato, the Allegheny County Chief Executive and Luke Ravenstahl, the Mayor of Pittsburgh commented that they will both lead the newly formed task force, which will also include some members from law enforcement agencies, the business sector and even regional charitable organizations.
Other well-known officials that have been appointed to the casino task force are State Rep. Jake Wheatley, a member of the Democrat Party from the Hill District, Perrysville Democratic Rep. Don Walko, Brookline Democratic state Sen. Wayne Fontana and Democratic State Senator Jim Ferlo from Lawrenceville.
In forming the task force, Onorato and Ravenstahl commented that they have the blessing of the PITG Gaming LLC, which was granted the sole power to make slot casino establishments by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board in December. PITG Gaming, which is solely owned by Detroit business mogul Don Barden, has picked a 17 acre land parcel in the Chateau section of the Pittsburgh North Shore for the site of the Majestic Star Casino.
The casino will have 3,000 slot machines that will eventually be maxed out to 5,000 slot machines. Even players from the private sector have a slot in the casino task force, like the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers, the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, the Equitable Resources and the Del Monte Foods, which all own property near the casino.
The task force will include a sub-committee which will mainly focus on public safety, transportation, social impact and even public property.
