On March 28th, 2008, Las Vegas strip casino industry interests have not yet been cleared off the state of Massachusetts, despite the gambling defeat on Beacon Hill, according to industry analysts. Clyde Barrow, a professor and gambling industry expert at the University of Massachusetts at Darmouth said that people should not expect any state house lobbying from the casinos but the casino industry will still keep an eye on Massachusetts because casino organizations believe that Massachusetts has a big and bright future regarding casino gaming.
Barrows said that the casino industry considers the state of Massachusetts as one of three apples that are yet to fall from the three, the two others "apples" are the states of Ohio and Texas. The biggest casino organization in the country, Harrah's Entertainment commented that they will still keep an eye on the developments in Massachusetts because it is after all, the home state of the chief executive officer, Gary Loveman.
While astonished and stunned at the dismissal of Gov. Deval Patrick's casino plan, Jan Jones, Harrah's government affairs chief commented that approving the casino legislation can really take a lot of time. She cites Kansas as an example, where Gov. Sebelius began pushing for building a casino in their state and four years after, is just now seeing some development with her casino plans.
Industry insiders said that other major casino players are also patiently waiting for any development in Massachusetts. Aside from Harrah's, the Las Vegas Sands Corporation is also expected to continue monitoring the situation in Massachusetts.
