On July 13th, 2007, the 330 would be poker, blackjack, craps and roulette dealers at the Wheeling Island Racing Track are currently undergoing casino dealer training at the West Virginia Northern Community are getting a lot of instruction regarding on what game they want to specialize in and some tips they need to do at the casino.
Some of these tips are like do not turn their backs on the players. Always keep their hands on the table. Give the gamblers some verbal cues. Allow the surveillance camera to see on what is currently happening at all times. That is a new experience for some of the bartenders, sales and from different jobs as they seek a job at the casino table games industry.
53 year-old Frank Tarovisky of Wheeling and a former U.S. Airways flight attendant practicing his chip handling at the gaming table said that he does not like to gamble but sees the casino dealer job as a great opportunity to earn big and move up in the career ladder. He is currently training in roulette and blackjack.
The West Virginia Northern Community College together with the Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center began offering casino dealer classes almost two weeks ago and new course for the prospective dealers at the Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort will begin next week. The Mountaineer Racetrack is just 40 miles of Wheeling along the Ohio River in Chester.
Mountaineer held a job fair in their hotel ballroom earlier this week. In both instances, the racing tracks won the gaming referendums last month allowing them to offer casino table games aside from the slot machines they have offered to their customers for more than a decade.
The casino table game expansion of both racing tracks is a direct response to the July 11th, 2007 opening of the slots parlor of the Meadows Racetrack and Casino. It has affected Wheeling Island, which has lost 17% percent of their usual profit the last week of June compared to the week before the opening of the Meadows Racetrack.
By September 1st, 2007, both the panhandle racetrack and casino will be opening the poker rooms and a month later, the casino table games like blackjack, craps and roulette. But that cannot start without having competent employees that will manage the game. A vacant college facility in downtown Wheeling has been changed into a casino dealer school.
Teachers who will be the supervisor of the casino games at Wheeling Island are carefully teaching prospective dealers on how to throw the roulette ball on the wheel and even muck the "cheques". Cheques are the gambling industry's term for the different chips of different monetary denominations that are use in the games.
Muck is the term used in quickly but correctly counting the chips and stacking them in an order fashion. 41 year-old Patty Kernan of Moundsville West Virginia commented that a lot of people told her that she can be a great dealer at the roulette game, where the main concept is to entertain the players as the game progresses. She is currently studying nursing at the community college but she said that working for the casino would be more profitable and fun.
Another student, 44 year-old Rick Cole, who is a commercial pilot from Clarington said that he is looking for a second job. He said that working in the casino is a great opportunity not only for him but for the residents in the area as well.
