Casino City Times Names Frist Person of The Year

Casino City Times has made a controversial announcement by naming one of the strongest opponents of gambling, former Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist, its 2006 Casino City Person of the Year.

Casino City Times supported its decision to name Frist Person of the year by saying that nobody could top the senator in terms of impact on the online gambling industry.

Frist was responsible for attaching the Unlawful internet gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) to an unrelated Safe Ports Bill. The bill prohibits banks and other financial institutions from handling transactions related to internet gambling.

With the law effected in October, many of the major players in the online gambling industry - most of which are publicly traded - were forced to pull out of their operations in the US.

Many speculated that Frist used the legislation to get the favor of Rep. Jim Leach, who is widely regarded as a potentially powerful ally in a presidential bid in the Iowa assembly. Frist however, decided not to try out for re-election after the Republicans lost the majority in the mid-term elections.
