On March 29, 2007, the leader of Swansea Council said that it would be unfair to Swansea if the planned casino establishment for their city were not be pushed through. The main reason for this is that the House of Lords rejected the British Government's proposal for a supercasino to be built in Manchester and 16 other gambling casinos to be built across Britain.
Chris Holley, the leader of the City Council of Swansea, commented that the House of Lords' decision is unfair towards them and that the Lords have done a great injustice to them. However, Tessa Jowell, the Culture Secretary, commented that the plans for the smaller casinos will push through and only the plans for the supercasino are problematic. Jowell stated that she has not prepared an emergency plan just in case their supercasino plan is rejected. She said that she will think about what her next step should be regarding this problem.
The House of Lords shut down the proposal in a 123-120 vote after the House of Commons voted on it. Swansea Council Leader, Chris Holley, said that the casino will be extremely beneficial for them. He claims that with the ongoing problems, the city will only become confused because it is incomprehensible that all of the plans should be stopped due to the disapproval of the supercasino.
The decision about the supercasino should be a separate issue. Culture Secretary Jowell also needs to reevaluate the case and think of a new alternative plan. In January, the British Government announced that Manchester will be the site of the first ever supercasino.
