Blair Comes to Prescotts Aid

Prime Minister Tony Blair said in an interview with BBC one's The Politics Show that he had not yet seen any evidence that Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott played a hand in the selection of the first super- casino to be opened in Britain.

"Let me just check my facts on this, but my understanding is that the planning is done by the local council and the mayor, so... has anybody got any actual evidence that John has interfered in this process in an improper way?" Blair asked.

The prime minister came to Prescott's defense by saying that his second in command will be assuming his post "as normal" when he goes on vacation next month.

Blair said he did not understand the controversy over Prescott's relations with Philip Anschutz, the American owner of the Millennium Dome, who is bidding to turn it into the first super casino in Britain.

"This is a group that... has put together UK Pounds 5 billion investment around the dome. It will create somewhere in the region of 20,000 jobs, over 10,000 houses, affordable houses, in London," he said. Blair likewise rejected calls for an inquiry into Prescott's links with Anschutz.

"That whole area of London is going to be regenerated. Why, why should we not want him to come and do this?"
