Blagojevich and Jones Advocate Casino Plan for Chicago Transit System

On September 17th, 2007, Governor Blagojevich and Senate President and Senate President Emil Jones reviewed plans for a city casino facility and two other new gaming facilities to finance $250 million needed for the rehabilitation of Chicago area's transit system.

With Senate approval on the casino plan approaching, the plan appears to be defeated in the House where a committee dismissed a Senate made plan last June to approve four casino facilities in the state.

Meeting until late evening, Gov. Blagojevich and Jones from the Democratic Party made a serious effort to convince the Senate Minority Leader in order to win some Republican support for the plan.

The casino plan, which is a part of a $26.4 billion state capital program, would give financial back-up to the Regional Transportation Authority, which faces a November 4th, 2007 cash cut that could lead to fare hikes; the service for bus and train commuters will also be affected.

The proposed plan will also be the biggest in state history and will finance the needs of the state in terms of education, infrastructure repairs and others. But an aide to House Speaker Michael Madigan, a Democrat from Chicago said that there is little interest for the plan in the legislature because the money that will be used for the project is from casino gambling.

Both Jones and Blagojevich refused to the talk about the issue but one important Senate Democrat said that the plan will not move without Madigan's cooperation.

Mayor Daley said that the Democrats in charge of operating the state government have been useless in fixing the schools and mass transportation because of their egos. He said that the House and Senate can just send it back to the city council and they will show them how it should be done.
