BetUS.com Fires Dozens of Costa Rican Workers As a Result of UIGEA

According to reports, BetUS.com, one of the largest companies in the online gambling industry, has fired dozens of its employees in Costa Rica. BetUS is the latest company to downsize its operations, and Bodog.com has announced that it is soon to follow suit.

The economy of Costa Rica was affected by the closing of BetonSports after the arrest of its CEO, David Carruthers in the US, and the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which prohibits online gambling in the US. With BetonSports' closing, about 1,500 employees in Costa Rica lost their jobs.

The Costa Rican online gambling industry employs over 5,000 people in the country, functioning as the country's third largest industry after telecommunications and tourism.

Online gambling operators fear that the government of Costa Rica may not be as committed as they hoped in protecting the online gambling industry from actions by the US Justice Department.

Currently, BetUS.com still maintains a marketing office in Vancouver, and there have been rumors that it may soon open a new call center in Panama, Antigua or Curacao.

It has also been reported that the National Football League has sent BetUS.com a cease and desist order regarding the use of NFL images on its ads and website.
