BetonSports Agrees To Shut Down Permanently

Internet betting firm BetonSports has conceded in court to a permanent injunction prohibiting it from taking online wagers from US residents. The agreement signals the end of a civil case rooted from indictments unsealed July 2006, but the company and a number of its employees still have to face illegal gambling charges.

BetonSports, which has ceased accepting bets from US customers since July 19, is in the process of completing the closure of their operations in Costa Rica and Antigua. The shares of BetonSports on the London Stock Exchange have been halted since July 17th.

Part of the settlement that BetonSports agreed to is to run an advertisement in a national newspaper informing readers that "it is a violation of United States law to transmit sports wagers or betting information using interstate or international telephone lines."

The said ad will also have in it a phone number which customer may dial to claim whatever funds the players may have deposited with the company before it ceased operations.

A similar message will also be posted in BetonSports' American-facing Web sites in a week's time. However, a company spokesperson said that he does not know when the customers will actually be paid.
