Belle Of Amelia Riverboat Casino May Open November 2006

St. Mary Parish in Louisiana President Paul Naquin on Monday said that the riverboat casino that residents have voted on could be operating by early November. This announcement was made following Saturday's parish vote in favor of the move.

The election saw 65 percent of the voters who turned out voted in favor of allowing the riverboat to relocate in Bayou Boeuf, near Amelia on the far eastern end of the parish.

The riverboat casino formerly named the Belle of the Orleans would be rightfully changing its name to the Belle of Amelia.

The boat itself is in Alabama, currently undergoing repairs from damage suffered at the grip of Hurricane Katrina.

The Louisiana Gaming Control Board has already approved the relocation from New Orleans to St. Mary Parish, depending on the approval of St. Mary Parish voters.

"The next step is they are going to have a project engineer on site Monday to look at the bulk heading and the parking lot," Naquin said of the move that will take place following the favorable vote. "They are on the move tonight. They're not going to let the grass grow under their feet."

About 400 jobs are expected to be made available by the casino riverboat. But with support jobs such as vendors, the number is expected to rise to 600-700.
