On April 29th, 2008, Majestic Star owner Don Barden commented that he would continue with his pledge to spend $3 million to encourage development in the Hill District area, but the funds would not be utilized to construct a brand new $290 million hockey arena. Barden said that they want to use the money in a project that will benefit more residents in the Hill District.
Don Barden recently met with Mayor Luke Ravenstahl from Pittsburgh and Allegheny County Chief Dan Onorato before announcing his decision. Barden said that he hopes to help in developing the Hill District in 5 years. After the Majestic Star Casino opens its doors on the North Shore, Barden said that he would utilize the $3 million to hire engineers, designers and even architects who would decide on how to change the Hill District.
Two weeks ago, Barden asked the state Gaming Control Board to permit him to discontinue his commitment to develop the Hill District because the Penguins receive a go signal from the city-county Sports and Exhibition Authority to enhance Hill District. Barden also plans to delay building the ballroom and outdoor amphitheater of the casino. The board has not made any decision regarding the matter yet.
The casino will open on May 2009. Barden commented that he plans to build the ballroom and amphitheater on the 2nd or 3rd year of the casino. State Senator Jim Ferlo said in a letter to Gaming Control Board Chairwoman Mary D. Colins that Barden should continue his original plans. Barden won the lone slots gambling license in Pittsburgh for fifty million dollars in December 2006, edging out two competitors.
