Aquinnah and Seneca Tribe Collaborate for Massachusetts Casinos

On October 24th, 2007, an American Indian Tribe from Massachusetts has petitioned the Seneca Nation of Indians for help in building a casino in the state. The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head or the Aquinnah Wampanaoag, have collaborated with the Seneca Tribe to win one of the three casino facilities proposed for the state.

Gov. Deval Patrick wants to construct three casino facilities in Massachusetts and under his proposal; any bid made by an Indian Tribe might receive extra consideration. The casinos will be located in the Boston Area, Western and Southern Massachusetts, which is part of the territory of the Aquinnah Wampanoag.

The Seneca Gaming Corporation, which is a part of the casino arm of the Seneca Nation, is giving the marketing analysis for the tribe. If the tribe gets a casino, the Seneca Gaming will also provide financial assistance for the construction of the casino.

Seneca Gaming currently manages casinos in Niagara Falls, Buffalo and Salamanca. In less than five years, the Seneca Casinos has produced more than $160 million in profits for New York, $32 million for Niagara Falls and $6 million for Salamanca. The permanent Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino and Hotel is expected to produce between $5 million-$7 million for the city.

Donald Widdiss, the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribal Chairman said that compared with other casino proposals, the Aquinnah casino will be owned locally and will be constructed locally. But the casino proposal in the state is still far away from reality.

The Massachusetts Legislature must approve of the proposal. The lawmakers are currently debating about the issue. If passed, the casinos must be put into bidding and studied before gambling operators are picked. Maurice John Sr., the Seneca Nation president said that they already have a record in completing casino projects.
